whats you're opinion on models?
I have nothing against models themselves, but i have a problem with the fashion industry thought. I studied fashion design for a year and the first thing our teacher told us is “The first thing you have to understand is you work for clothes. You have to understand girls behind those clothes are just here for wearing those clothes. Nobody is perfect, you will never find a perfect girl for a photo shoot. In magazines, girls are not perfect, they are all photoshopped. Even the tallest one, the thinnest one, each photo is photoshopped. You will work every day with Photoshop. Those models you see on papers are NOT real unfortunately. This is a deep problem in the fashion world : we want to create clothes for humans, but finally photos we see don’t represent the human variety and reality.”
When you begin to draw clothes, the model has unrealistic proportions, like this :
—> My teacher always told “damn, make her legs longer and thinner”, “her waist is way too large”, “make her feet bigger”, “her boobs are too small”. And you are like “but that’s not reality” and she is like “of course it’s not, but it’s the fashion world.”
And after drawing the model, you draw clothes, and you sew those clothes, and those clothes have to be wear by someone for a photo shoot .. and you have this horrible thought : “i have to find someone who’ll be able to fit in those clothes, but she doesn’t exist … but that’s not a problem, Photoshop is here”. Photoshop for knees, photoshop for skin, photoshop for height, photoshop for thigh gap, photoshop for hair, hand, feet, waist, boobs .. You photoshop the whole model and finally, the girl behind clothes it’s completely different from the beginning.
Models you see on magazines don’t represent the human variety and reality. They are the result of a good graphic designer. And the worst thing is that industry asks for skinny girls, but when they are too skinny, photoshop is still here for hiding bones.
So many models have incredibly beautiful faces, but they begin to tell it themselves : their body is photoshopped. So it’s just impossible to look like them in reality.
That’s why i don’t have a “model example” and that’s why when i was in this school, i chose to not use humans for photo shoots. I made my first photo shoot with my dog who was wearing a skirt, and written under “Everyone can wear this skirt” :) And my teacher told me “you have this right view of fashion, everyone is allowed to wear clothes, no matter their height and weight”.
So i have nothing against those girls, but i have a problem with this fake image magazines try to sell. This fake image who is one the biggest problem for young (or old) girls (and boys). This fake image who creates insecurities in our mind. This industry who wants us to be like this image, even if they know we will never be, because it’s a fake one.
